CRN & PED Registration

Pressure equipment sold into Canada or the European Union has to satisfy a second set of rules on top of ASME.

In Canada each province registers pressure vessel designs and issues a Canadian Registration Number; a design registered in one province carries a CRN with that province's digit, and the number is extended as other provinces accept it. The vessel still has to be built to ASME Section VIII, but the design must be registered before it can be installed, and the CRN appears on the nameplate beside the U-stamp. IPAC's successor holds CRNs for the aftercooler and separator ranges and can register additional sizes on request.

The Pressure Equipment Directive

In the European Union the Pressure Equipment Directive applies to vessels above a pressure-volume threshold. Compliance is shown by the CE mark and a declaration of conformity, with the conformity assessment route set by the vessel's category. The PED is a design-and-manufacturing directive rather than a construction code, so an ASME-built vessel can be PED compliant if the assessment is done - which is how IPAC water-cooled aftercoolers, air-cooled aftercoolers and separators are supplied for European compressor packages.

The Model Number Does Not Change

Neither registration changes the catalogue model number. State the destination at the time of enquiry so the correct documentation and nameplate are supplied with the unit.

No. The vessel is still built to ASME Section VIII; the CRN is the province's registration of the design, obtained before installation and shown on the nameplate with the province digit.

Yes. The PED is a directive rather than a construction code, so an ASME vessel can be PED compliant once the conformity assessment for its category is done and the declaration issued.

No. W0110 is W0110 in Ohio, Ontario or Hamburg. State the destination when enquiring so the right documentation and nameplate ship with the unit.
