Moisture Separators and Drain Traps

An aftercooler condenses the water; it does not remove it. The condensate leaves the cooler as a mist carried in the air stream, and a centrifugal separator is what takes it out. IPAC separators spin the air past a fixed impeller so the heavier droplets are thrown to the wall and drain to a sump, then an anti-re-entrainment baffle stops them being picked up again. There are no moving parts and no element to replace, and the separator holds 99 percent efficiency down to 20 percent of its rated flow.

The sump then has to be emptied without losing air, which is the drain trap's job. The SAC float trap discharges upward as it fills, has a hand blow-down valve for a daily check, and is offered in aluminum, cast iron, carbon steel and stainless steel bodies for pressures from 150 to 1,010 PSIG.

What We Need to Quote

A selection comes together quickly once the duty is stated.

  • Compressor SCFM and pressure, or the heat load
  • Inlet temperature and the cooling water or ambient temperature
  • Required outlet temperature
  • Design pressure and any code stamp

Replacing an Existing Unit

Where a unit is being replaced, the nameplate does most of the work.

  • IPAC or HiROSS model number, exactly as stamped
  • National Board number where one is fitted
  • Connection sizes and orientation
