Compressed Air Aftercoolers

Air leaves a compressor hot - typically 250°F from a two-stage rotary screw and up to 350°F from a single-stage machine - and saturated with water vapour. An aftercooler brings that temperature down before the air reaches the receiver, condensing most of the water so a separator can remove it. Every 1,000 SCFM of air at 100 PSIG carries more than 30 gallons of water a day into the system if it is not cooled first.

IPAC built three aftercooler ranges to do this. The A Series uses a fan and ambient air and needs no water. The 51 Series is a shell and tube unit that cools with plant water to within 15 to 20°F of the water temperature. The 59 Series is the same construction eight inches longer, for a 5 to 10°F approach where drier air is worth the extra surface.

What We Need to Quote

A selection comes together quickly once the duty is stated.

  • Compressor SCFM and pressure, or the heat load
  • Inlet temperature and the cooling water or ambient temperature
  • Required outlet temperature
  • Design pressure and any code stamp

Replacing an Existing Unit

Where a unit is being replaced, the nameplate does most of the work.

  • IPAC or HiROSS model number, exactly as stamped
  • National Board number where one is fitted
  • Connection sizes and orientation
