Oil transfers heat far less readily than water, so an oil cooler needs more surface for the same duty and benefits from baffles that keep the oil turbulent on the shell side. The STA Series is built that way: oil across the baffled shell, water through copper tubes in one, two or four passes, cast iron bonnets that come off for cleaning, and a model number that reads as shell diameter and length in inches.
Seventeen sizes run from a 3 inch shell 14 inches long to an 8 inch shell 72 inches long. Each is published as an S build for maximum heat transfer and an L build for minimum pressure drop, with selection charts in MBH against oil flow for both two-pass and four-pass arrangements.
