The STA Series is a compact shell and tube cooler for hydraulic oil, lubricating oil, transmission and transformer oil, and any other fluid that needs to give up heat to water. Oil flows through the shell across baffled copper tubes while cooling water makes one, two or four passes through the tubes. The model number is the shell diameter and nominal length in inches - an STA05024 is a 5 inch shell, 24 inches long - which makes a replacement straightforward once the nameplate is read. Each size is published in an S (high-performance) and L (low pressure drop) variant.

Construction

Shell

  • Carbon steel with baffles set for oil-side turbulence. Mounting feet are slotted for the bolt sizes listed on each part page.

Tubes

  • Copper as standard. Copper-nickel, stainless steel and admiralty brass are available where the cooling water is brackish, treated or otherwise aggressive.

Bonnets

  • Cast iron, removable, with the pass arrangement set by the partition. Zinc anodes can be fitted to the bonnets for sea or well water.

Selection

  • Duty is set in MBH (thousands of BTU per hour) with correction factors for water inlet temperature, oil outlet temperature and glycol content - see the selection notes on this page.

Sizing an STA cooler

Three numbers and three correction factors

  • MBH = GPM x 200 x oil temperature drop / 1,000 (light turbine oil)
  • Correct for water inlet: 0.71 at 70°F rising to 2.56 at 120°F
  • Correct for oil outlet: 2.94 at 110°F falling to 0.52 at 175°F

Dimensions in inches from the STA data sheet: Overall Length is end to end over the bonnets, Nominal Length is the shell between connections. Conn. 1 and Conn. 2 are the two connection sizes on the unit; confirm which is oil and which is water against the drawing for your pass arrangement. Each size is offered as -S and -L.
